A fragrant herb that is part of the sage family, Lamiaceae. It is sometimes simply referred to as "clary" or "clary wort."

Clary sage is a biennial or perennial herb that grows to a height of 2 to 4 feet.  It has square stems and large, fuzzy, heart-shaped leaves with serrated edges.  The plant produces tall spikes of small, lilac or pale blue flowers that are quite attractive.  The leaves and flowers of the plant emit a sweet, earthy, and herbaceous fragrance that is often described as musky or woody. The scent is soothing and has been used in aromatherapy and perfumery.

In traditional herbal medicine, clary sage has been used for various purposes. It was historically used to treat a range of conditions, including digestive complaints and eye ailments. It was also believed to have mild sedative properties.

While clary sage has some culinary uses in herbal teas and flavouring, it is not as commonly used in cooking as other types of sage (Salvia officinalis). The primary use is more in the realm of herbal medicine and aromatherapy.
